Call for Expressions of Interest: Māori Research Leader

The Antarctic Science Platform (ASP) is inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) to serve as the Project Leader of a Māori-led research programme. This is a ca. four-year appointment at 0.2FTE, within the ASP’s second phase of funding.


Antarctic Science Platform

The Antarctic Science Platform (ASP) is a Strategic Science Investment, funded by the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and hosted by Antarctica New Zealand. The Antarctic Science Platform involves Crown Research Institutes and universities and comprises a portfolio of research programmes that contribute to understanding Antarctica’s impact on the global earth system and how this might change in a +2°C (Paris agreement) world.

The ASP’s second phase of funding (2025-2032) commences 1 July 2025.


MĀTAURANGA MĀORI HOE

The Mātauranga Māori Hoe (i.e. research programme) aims to enable Māori to explore their mātauranga Māori connections to Antarctica, and supports other research underway within the ASP.

The two workstreams (2025-2029) are:

Goal 1: Capability Pathways

  • Engage with the Māori research communities, kura Kaupapa and kura a iwi to build Māori Research capability from Rangatahi to Experienced Researchers.
  • Establish ASP STEM capability building programmes; from rangatahi to PhD., which may include postgraduate scholarships, international indigenous connections and field exposure/experiences.

Goal 2: Building Mātauranga Māori

  • Build on existing mātauranga Māori and leverage from ASP phase 1 projects.
  • Build new mātauranga Māori via contestable funding mechanisms, with a focus on ngā haehae: Whakapapa, Kaitiakitanga, Rangatiratanga, Whanaungatanga, Auahatanga.
  • Embed value add, mātauranga Māori-led research initiatives into other ASP research projects and initiatives.


Role purpose and description

The purpose of the Project Lead role is to provide strategic and operational leadership for the design, development, delivery and monitoring of activities in the Mātauranga Māori Hoe.

  • A cover letter detailing a brief outline of what you would bring to the role and an acknowledgment:
    • that you are aware of the significant workload the Project lead role entails for the time frame to June 2025;
    • that you have capacity to fully engage in this process;
    • that your employing organisation is supporting your EOI to serve in this Project Leadership role.
  • A CV which includes a section on research leadership and stakeholder engagement (you may use MBIE CV templates or another style).
